Why It Scores 6.5 — And The Label Line Behind Each Number

6.5

Plain dried beetroot powder with no nitrate figure on the label. That is the same position as the ranked whole-beet capsules; the picks that add a nitrate source score higher.

1,300 mg of beet powder per serving. The trials used beetroot juice with a measured nitrate dose (Wylie 2013), which is far more beet than two capsules hold.

Organic beetroot is the only active ingredient and the amount is printed. The capsule also contains microcrystalline cellulose and magnesium stearate. No certifier's seal that we could read, and no testing is stated.

Truth Check

Marketing Claims Vs. Reality

Partial
Rich in healthy nitrates, supports healthy blood pressure

This line is on the front label. Beetroot juice lowered blood pressure in controlled trials (Webb 2008, Siervo 2013), through its nitrate. The label states no nitrate content for these capsules, so the size of any effect is unknown.

Partial
1,300 mg of organic beetroot powder per serving

Printed on the Supplement Facts panel. No independent assay is published.

Partial
Can improve athletic performance

This line is from the shop text. Nitrate-rich beetroot juice improved exercise tolerance in trials at measured nitrate doses (Wylie 2013); a small capsule dose has not been tested.

The Deep Dive

What Our Test Actually Found

01

Capsules trade dose for convenience

A scoop of beet powder is 4 to 5 g and the juice trials used far more. Two capsules hold 1.3 g. That is the price of skipping the taste.

02

No pick on our list prints a nitrate number

This is a weakness of the whole category, not only of this bottle. It is also why we cannot tell you how these capsules compare on the one thing that matters.

03

What would move the score

A stated and tested nitrate content per serving. With that, a capsule could be judged on effect instead of on beet weight.

Full analysis: all pros & cons (7), buy if / skip if
Pros
  • Organic beetroot as the only active ingredient
  • Capsules: no taste, no mixing
  • Amount per serving is printed
  • Sold direct from our own shop
Cons
  • No nitrate content on the label
  • 1.3 g of powder is a fraction of the beet used in the trials
  • $0.97 a serving, well above the ranked capsule picks
Buy If
  • You want beetroot without the taste
  • You want an organic, single-active capsule
  • You want to buy direct from the shop behind this site
Skip If
  • You want a nitrate effect on blood pressure or endurance; the concentrated powders at the top are built for that
  • Price matters; NOW's beet capsules cost far less per serving
  • You want a third-party tested product

The effect people buy beetroot for comes from dietary nitrate, and the blood-pressure and exercise trials used juice with a measured nitrate dose. Two capsules of dried beet deliver a fraction of that beet mass, and the label cannot tell you how much nitrate it contains. The top picks are concentrated powders that add a nitrate source or at least a much larger serving.

This is our own product, and we scored it with the same five criteria as every other beetroot product on our list. The Supplement Facts panel shows 1,300 mg of organic beetroot powder per two capsules. It is plain dried beet in a capsule. Like every pick on the list it gives no nitrate figure, and capsules hold far less beet than a scoop of powder or a glass of juice.

The Bottom Line

Clean and convenient, and too small to count on

Our beetroot capsules are a tidy way to take dried beet. For the nitrate effect that makes beetroot interesting, the dose is small and unmeasured, and the price is higher than the ranked capsules. If you want that effect, buy one of the concentrated powders at the top of the list.
