The episode
In October 2010, Anderson Cooper sat across from Eminem for CBS's 60 Minutes and raised the old schoolroom claim: nothing rhymes with "orange." People saying that, Eminem answered, "kind of pisses me off." Taken at face value, he conceded, nothing rhymes with it exactly — but enunciate it, bend it into more than one syllable, and the wall gives way: "I put my orange four-inch door hinge in storage and ate porridge with George." The trick, he explained, is to "figure out the science to breakin' down words." The exchange distilled the obsessive word-drilling behind his catalog — treating English as bendable raw material — that made a Detroit ninth-grade dropout the best-selling music artist of the American 2000s.
