The episode
After graduating from Zurich's Polytechnic in 1900, Einstein could not land an academic post — for two years he scraped by on tutoring and temporary teaching. In 1902 the Swiss patent office in Bern hired him as a "technical expert, third class," examining other people's inventions full-time. Instead of treating the job as exile from physics, he turned it into what he later called "that worldly cloister where I hatched my most beautiful ideas." At that desk, the unknown clerk produced the ground-breaking papers of his 1905 "miracle year" — light quanta, Brownian motion, special relativity, E = mc² — while still reporting to the office. Within a decade, the universities that had ignored him were competing to hire him.
