Fish Oil for Your Brain? A 2-Year Trial Found Zero Memory Benefit — and a Heart-Rhythm Risk
In a two-year randomized trial, high-dose DHA reached the brain (CSF DHA rose ~17%) but produced no difference in cognitive performance versus placebo. Separately, a meta-analysis links high-dose omega-3 to a higher atrial-fibrillation risk. Fish oil isn't useless — its evidence-backed job is lowering triglycerides. Take it for the right reason, and dose it right.

Fish oil is one of the most-taken supplements on earth, and “brain and memory support” is the promise on most labels. It's such an obvious-sounding claim that few people ask whether it's actually been tested head-to-head. It has.
The DHA got to the brain. The memory didn't move.
In a two-year randomized, placebo-controlled trial, older adults took 2 grams of DHA a day. It worked biologically: DHA levels in the cerebrospinal fluid rose about 17%, proving the omega-3 reached the brain. But on the outcome that matters — cognitive performance — there were no treatment differences versus placebo. The nutrient arrived; the memory benefit never showed up.
And more isn't automatically safer
A separate meta-analysis of large cardiovascular trials found that high-dose omega-3 supplementation was associated with a higher risk of atrial fibrillation — an irregular heartbeat — in a dose-dependent way. That doesn't make fish oil dangerous for everyone, but it kills the idea that 'more is always better.'
So what is fish oil actually for
It has a real, well-evidenced job: lowering triglycerides, and supporting heart health when the form and dose are right. So skip it as a memory pill. If you take it, take it for your heart — prioritize a re-esterified triglyceride (rTG) form, a genuine EPA+DHA dose, and third-party freshness testing (TOTOX). That's what separates an omega-3 that earns its place from a rancid softgel.
