Intermittent Fasting for Brain Health: The Study Everyone Ran Was a Bone Trial
A Rutgers pilot was reported this week as protection against dementia. It measured no dementia. It is registered as a bone study, cognition was one of twenty exploratory measures, and of four cognitive tests exactly one beat the control group.

This week a Rutgers pilot trial travelled the health press as evidence that a short eating window protects your brain. One outlet ran it as "Time-Restricted Eating May Lower Dementia Risk, Study Finds". Another, written for clinicians, said it "Preserves Cognitive Function in Adults". No dementia outcome was measured in the trial, in either direction.
It is registered as a bone study
The trial has a registry entry, and the registry is public. NCT05548517 is titled "TRE: Microbiome, Metabolic Health and Bone". Its primary outcome is hip bone mineral density. Cognitive function sits in the third tier — Other Outcome Measures — as one of twenty exploratory endpoints, alongside grip strength, vitamin D and diet quality. Not one report in the wave mentioned this.
Four cognitive tests. One beat the control group.
Forty-seven postmenopausal women aged 50 to 79 were randomised for six months, and four cognitive tests were run. Spatial planning and problem-solving improved in the fasting arm and, importantly, differed between the two groups. That result is real and worth saying plainly. Memory and learning improved inside the fasting arm only — the abstract states the change between groups was not significant. Multitasking and reaction time, in its own words, were "not changed by the intervention".
The overstatement starts in the abstract
Read the abstract's conclusion and then its results, in that order. The conclusion says time-restricted eating "improved memory, learning, and problem-solving tests". The results section, two paragraphs earlier, says the memory comparison between groups was not significant. Three things claimed, one supported — and you can see it on a single page, before any journalist gets involved.
What this does not mean
It does not mean the study is bad. A pilot that finds one signal across four exploratory tests is a normal pilot, and the principal investigator herself called the effect modest. It was also open-label: everyone knew which group they were in, which matters more than usual when the outcome is a computerised test that people get better at with practice and effort.
So keep the eating window if it suits you — it costs nothing and it is not the villain here. Just do not buy it as brain insurance yet, and be careful with any headline that turns twenty exploratory measures inside a bone trial into a dementia claim. The findings should be treated as preliminary until a peer-reviewed publication exists, which is what the American Society for Nutrition says about its own conference abstracts.
