Our take — If you want to try HMB as it was tested, this bottle saves you the arithmetic: two capsules with each of three meals. The capsule is as clean as they come. It costs about a dollar a day, and the honest expectation is a small benefit if you are new to training or returning from a layoff, and little if you already lift regularly.

Our take — Clear Muscle labels and doses its HMB correctly and is the only free-acid option here. No trial shows the free acid beating the calcium salt, and the headline result on the listing has not been reproduced. For the same 3 g a day, NutraBio costs less than half and BulkSupplements about an eighth.
Muscle Growth In Four Short Lessons
The dose is 3 g a day, in three doses.
The position stand puts it at about 38 mg per kg of body weight a day, taken as 1 g three times (Wilson 2013). Three of the six labels here direct less: 1 g, 1.5 g or one unsplit serving. Check the directions, not the number on the front.
Know what the salt weight means.
Most HMB is sold as calcium HMB monohydrate, which is about four fifths HMB. 3 g of the salt gives roughly 2.5 g of HMB and around 400 mg of calcium. Only the free acid is 100% HMB, and it costs several times more.
Expect little if you already train.
Small strength gains in untrained lifters, trivial effects in trained ones (Rowlands 2009; Sanchez-Martinez 2018; Jakubowski 2020). HMB makes the most sense at the start of a programme, after a layoff or in a hard calorie deficit.
Wilson 2013 (PMID 23374455); Nissen 1996 (PMID 8941534); Rowlands 2009 (PMID 19387395); Sanchez-Martinez 2018 (PMID 29249685); Jakubowski 2020 (PMID 32456217).
Every product here contains the same compound, so the ranking turns on the label. The largest share of the score, 30 percent, asks whether a serving and its directions reproduce the trials: about 3 g a day, usually in three 1 g doses (Wilson 2013). Form and label clarity follow at 20 percent: calcium HMB monohydrate is about four fifths HMB by weight, and only one panel prints that split. Testing is read from the label and the listing, and we searched NSF's Certified for Sport database for all six on Oct 11, 2026; none is listed. Formula covers the capsule and excipients. Value is the cost of a day at 3 g at the featured Amazon US price on Oct 11, 2026. Every number we cite was read from the product's own Supplement Facts photo. We did not buy or take these products.
Dose vs the Trials · 30%
The trials gave about 3 g of HMB a day (38 mg per kg of body weight), usually as 1 g three times a day (Wilson 2013); the first trial compared 1.5 g and 3 g (Nissen 1996). We scored how closely a label serving and its directions reproduce that. A label that says 1 g once a day leaves you at a third of the studied dose unless you triple it yourself.
Form & Label Clarity · 20%
HMB is sold as the calcium salt (calcium HMB monohydrate) or as the free acid. A label scores highest when it says which form it is and prints how much HMB the serving contains, because 1 g of the calcium salt holds about 0.8 g of HMB. A panel that prints only the salt weight scores lower; a garbled ingredient name scores lower still.
Testing & Manufacturing · 20%
Third-party testing and manufacturing statements, read from the label and the listing gallery, and a search of NSF's Certified for Sport database. A printed lookup for independent lab results or a third-party testing statement scores 8.5; nothing printed scores 7.5. None of the six is NSF Certified for Sport.
Formula & Capsule · 15%
What surrounds the HMB: a vegetable capsule beats gelatin, no excipients beat six, and added ingredients below a useful dose cost points. Loose powder has the cleanest ingredient line but has to be measured.
Value · 15%
Cost per day at 3 g, the studied dose, at the featured Amazon US price on Oct 11, 2026. Where the label serving is smaller we count the capsules it takes to reach 3 g.

How HMB Works
- 1
The body makes it from leucine
HMB is a metabolite of leucine. Only a small part of the leucine you eat is converted, which is the argument for taking HMB directly.
- 2
It slows muscle protein breakdown
In the first trial HMB lowered urinary 3-methylhistidine and plasma creatine kinase, both markers of muscle damage, during the first weeks of a new lifting programme (Nissen 1996).
- 3
It may add to protein synthesis
The position stand lists two mechanisms: less protein breakdown and more protein synthesis (Wilson 2013).
- 4
The effect fades with training
Meta-analyses find small strength benefits in untrained lifters and trivial ones in trained lifters (Rowlands 2009; Sanchez-Martinez 2018). A muscle used to training is damaged less, which leaves HMB less to do.
What to Expect From HMB
Loading
The position stand finds HMB most effective when taken for two weeks before a hard bout (Wilson 2013). Take 3 g a day in three doses with meals.
Where the first trial measured
In the three-week trial, markers of muscle breakdown were lower and the weight lifted was higher with 1.5 g and 3 g a day (Nissen 1996). The subjects were starting a new programme.
Trained lifters see little
Across trials of five to twelve weeks, effects on strength and fat-free mass in trained lifters were trivial (Rowlands 2009; Sanchez-Martinez 2018; Jakubowski 2020).
Decide by your own log
If soreness and training volume have not changed after a month, the money is better spent on protein and creatine.
The bottom line
NutraBio is the reference HMB.
1 g three times a day with meals, printed on the label, in a vegetable capsule with no excipients and a lookup for independent lab results.
The powder is the value play.
BulkSupplements costs $0.28 a day at 3 g and is the only panel that prints the HMB content: 825 mg per gram of the calcium salt.
Three labels under-dose.
Nutricost directs 1 g a day and Bucked Up 1.5 g. Both are sound products at six capsules a day; as labelled they give a third and a half of the studied dose.
The free acid is not worth four times the price.
MuscleTech Clear Muscle doses correctly, and no trial shows the free acid beating the calcium salt. Its headline result comes from one study later work did not reproduce.
